TV viewing not to blame for juvenile obesity
(Physical activity and sedentary behaviours in youth: issues and controversies J Roy Soc Health 124(1):29-33)
An article published in The Journal of The Royal Society for the Promotion of Health suggests that TV viewing and computer-game playing are not necessarily to blame for an increase in juvenile obesity. The authors raise the possibility that some preconceptions concerning physical activity and sedentary lifestyles in young people may be false or, at least, need further thought.
The authors report on the findings of their project STIL – Sedentary Teenagers and Inactive Lifestyles – established at Loughborough University to look at youth sedentary behaviour and physical activity patterns. Their results show that TV viewing and computer-game playing are largely unconnected with physical activity, suggesting that there is time for both. They also found that the total media use by children (TV viewing, computer-game playing, listening to music and reading) is around 35 to 40 hours a week, an amount that has not changed in the last 40 years.
The authors remind us that young people have always had sedentary pastimes, including board games, reading and listening to music. They say the fact that the youth of today might find computer games or satellite TV more appealing is only a problem for physical activity if these activities replace previously active pursuits. The authors argue that car use – such as in the case of children being driven to school - is more likely to have replaced previous physical activity.
The authors conclude that future research and policy needs to look at the many environments that operate in shaping sedentary and physically active behaviours, such as the psychological, social, physical, and policy environments.
